My parents, Mary, and I drove down to Maryland on the twenty-fourth to spend Christmas with the Zubas and Kate. One of the "compulsory family activities" was a trip into D.C. to the National Botanical Gardens. Outside they had a display of trains which we all enjoyed, especially J.T. apparently.

Inside, there were replicas of all the famous buildings on the national mall, all made of natural materials. So, here's the real capitol building. . .

. . . and here's the replica. The east and west wings that aren't on the replica were added sometime later to the building itself. I don't remember the date.

This is the Smithsonian. Why don't Americans build buildings this pretty any more?

The room with dozens of different orchids was my favorite.

My adorable nephew.
